Who knew the effects of the Great Resignation took hold so fast? In this article, I think of why so many American workers are fed up with their jobs and their whole industry. Who knows how this demographic shift will turn out, but it’s apparent that this feeling of quitting has been building up for years.
In reflection, I remember how we were told to finish college, get married, have two children, keep buying a bigger house, and have one job our whole life. This machinery made sense back in college. But how did America get this so wrong? For many, we’ve had divorces and many jobs since our collegiate days.
I can see why an employee would be excited about a new mission statement in the golden years of only having one job and pension waiting for her. Employees could get behind it because they knew they had a lifetime-appointed job.
This reality is not the case any longer. We have employment at will. These arrangements always place bosses in a spot to have your replacement in mind. Plus, employees are quitting quietly or waiting until the next downturn, when they will be let go from their job.
This disconnection has led to a situation of high levels of pure apathy. This apathy is now a tectonic shift in employers and employees not caring about each other as human beings.
