CURRENT VR TRAINING EXAMPLES

What do you first think of when you hear ‘virtual reality?’ Many think of a better way for their children to play video games. This analysis may be the case in the near term. But this group is missing out on one of the megatrends in human resources.

This megatrend is the radical idea that our immersive reality (VR) seems to be the next step in our training evolution (source). In fact, according to an article from Accenture, VR training is expected to hit $6.3 billion in 2022 (source).

In this quick blog post, you will learn how your competitors use VR training to turn their employees into experts more swiftly, effectively, and smoothly (source). The following examples will illustrate how your organization may be behind leading in our new industrial era (source).

1. WALMART

Walmart has seen positive results from its VR training programs. Their early results indicate that immersive VR training outperforms traditional observation methods or reading instructions from a pdf (source). Walmart is finding that this training improves retention of new information by a whopping 15%. From here, Walmart has established 200 VR training academies (source). This training focuses on preparing employees for Black Friday (source).

2, KFC

KFC has shown success in training its employees to virtually fry chicken (source). They have called this program a “Virtual Training Escape Room.” This new form of training brings the trainee into a gamified experience to learn to fry the perfect chicken (source). This program assists in their Chicken Mastery Certification (source).

Additionally, KFC plans to use VR for its GM and headquarters employee onboarding. In an official KFC press release, George Felix, KFC U.S. director of advertising, said, “Our cooking process hasn’t changed much in 70 years, but the way we can train our cooks using modern technology sure has (source).”

3. TRAINING QUARTERBACKS

It’s football season, so it would be worth noting that STRIVR (VR pioneer) is trailblazing the teaching of professional quarterbacks (source).

4. HILTON USING VR TRAINING FOR EMPATHY

Hilton’s Senior Director of Learning Innovation (Blaire Bhojwani) says they use VR training to learn empathy. ‘Our goal is to make our corporate team members virtually sweat.’ This ‘virtual sweat’ will allow employees to feel what it’s like to be in the shoes of a room service attendant (source). Hilton reports that “VR Hilton” can reduce in-class training time to 20 min (from four hours) (source).
